This study is divided into three stages for exploration and research: (1) the first stage is “investigation of traditional life culture of the Thao Tribe”: literature review, on-site observation, and in-depth interviews are used to compile the features of traditional life culture of the Thao Tribe at Sun Moon Lake; (2) the second stage is “design of Thao Tribe cultural creative products”: the application models and procedures of designing creative products are used to analyze the codes of traditional life culture of the Thao Tribe, and to design creative products with the Thao Tribe symbolic content; (3) the third stage is “evaluation of the characteristics of Thao Tribe cultural creative products”: the local and foreign groups of Sun Moon Lake are used as representatives for conducting questionnaire survey on product character image perception and design evaluation. After statistical analysis, the product design is modified and charts are created for the proposition of concrete conclusions and suggestions. Based on results at different stages of research, the following points are summarized: (1) an analysis of traditional life culture of the Thao Tribe can divide it into four major aspects of “economy / life”, “systems / rites and customs”, “legends / taboos”, and “religion / rituals,” and the aspects are all intimately interconnected; (2) existing features from traditional life culture of the Thao Tribe are: belief in ancestral spirits and system of oracles, rituals as those for planting, hunting, the white eel, and for harvest among traditional festivals, behavioral practice of daily life in legends and stories, evolution and changes in grain pestling, fishing, and hunting, among others; (3) capture the symbolic content of traditional life culture of the Thao Tribe, and incorporate “descriptive design” into product creation; (4) use the three-stage narrative design process of “creative background”, “cultural transmission”, and “creative practice” to complete the design of two Thao Tribe cultural creative products: “Sun Moon Lake Thao Tribe Deer-Chasing Image Clock” and “Thao Tribe Sound of Pestling Message Stationery Set”; (5) focus on the “product function”, “creative design”, and “cultural symbolism” in the characteristics of cultural creative products in conducting an image perception survey. The results showed that subjects preferred characteristics such as “association ability”, “uniqueness”, and “story” in sequence; (6) through the survey of image perception and design evaluation, it is possible to distill the needs of potential consumers, and design modifications can make cultural creative products better conform to consumer expectations in order to promote the development and business opportunities in the cultural creative industry.
