The proponents of environmentalism also argue that the governments should design systems to encourage the hotel industry to discretionarily display friendly attitudes and behaviors toward the environment and even actively conduct environmental management. Hence, the purpose of this study is to understand the adopted practices of environmental management and to evaluate the benefits and obstacles of implementing environmental management in the hotel industry. In-depth interview was conducted with 15 senior managers of five five-star international hotels in Taipei to collect data. The results of the study show that these hotels adopted the practices of environmental management inclusive: (1) the application of air heat pump to produce electricity and gas so as to save energy efficiently, (2) the usage of the environmental card to persuade guests not to change bed quilt so as to conserve water resources, (3) the usage of the refuse storage containers to resort and recycle the trash, (4) the implementation of sewage processing before the discharge of sewage, and (5) to get certification of HACCP. In addition, the implementation of environmental management seemed to have significant benefits including environment protection, finance benefits, and operation benefits. On the other hand, the hotels were hindered from environmental management due to the absence of investment incentives, cooperation of consumers, and employee involvement.
