As visitors first enter the country, they often come in contact with tour guides. With such a large responsibility, tour guides must have the patience to handle every detail. Therefore, without high emotional intelligence, good logical thinking, a wealth of knowledge, rapid response and fluent language skills, it may be difficult for them to fulfill these duties. However, due to an unstable world schedule, occupational stress issue thus represents important. Most tour guides have no specific fixed working hours, and the majority of their pay comes from travel expenses, tips and commissions they frequently give long explanations, such as introducing the landscape, and standing for a prolonged period of time while doing so may cause physical discomfort. This research focuses on tour guides and explores the relationship among emotional intelligence, occupational stress and quality of life. In this study, questionnaires were issued to members of the Tourist Association of the Republic of China. Out of the total 500 questionnaires that were issued, 396 questionnaires were returned; of these there were 18 invalid questionnaires, thus yielding a total of 378 valid questionnaires. The effective rate was 75.6%, and SPSS 12.0 package software was used for data analysis. This study found that emotional intelligence has a significant positive effect on quality of life. Also, in terms of occupational stress, the study also found that emotional intelligence and occupational stress have a significant impact on quality of life; specifically, physical health tends to be the biggest influence on quality of life. Emotional intelligence may not be the primary influence on occupational stress, but it also will affect quality of life. Recommendations include participating in a variety of training or practical courses for tour guides, as this will help them increase their abilities and thus achieve greater success and fulfillment in their careers.
