This study shows that the differences the Rainbow Mothers of a non-profit organization, Family Life Education in Taiwan Rainbow Love Association (FLETRLA), have made. The Rainbow mothers (RMs) enter into the elementary schools and instruct the students with interesting stories. This research investigates their motives for Life Education, the difficulties they have encountered as well as the ways they have coped with and personal growth and changes after the voluntary services. The methods to investigate were semi-structured interviews, telephone interviews, and the relevant data collected from FLETRLA. The interviews included 20 Rainbow Mothers, 20 teachers and 20 students.
The findings are:
First, RMs’ multiple motives for their voluntary services take the self, family and community into consideration.
Second, the reasons for RMs to go on are the relationships among RMs and the specific objectives of FLETRLA although they have run into difficulties such as lack of fund, volunteers, teaching experiences, support from schools, etc.
Third, the advantages of the services are the self-growth, the impact on the family members, the harmonious relationships between parents and children.
Fourth, from the viewpoints of teachers and students, RMs’ voluntary services bring students, schools and the community a positive impact. RMs are an important human resource.
According to the results and follow-up studies, this study makes several suggestions.
