Abstract
Airline industry worldwide has experienced tremendous changes and reforms in the
past decade. With a series of economic downturns, regional unrest, epidemic widespread and
soaring fuel price, the impact on travel intention from the public and cost burden have driven
airlines on finding ways to sustain its business and still remain competitive. This paper took
airlines as the object of study, while surveys were conducted by airline management from
different carriers in order to understand the factors affecting airlines acquisitions and
mergers.
When conducting the analysis of key factors affecting airlines mergers, this paper was
divided into two phases. In phase one, four dimensions and criteria swaying airline merger
were established, while importance criteria were shifted out and the research structure
verified by means of expert survey. In phase two, Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process was
utilized to attain the weights from each dimension and criteria.
The study shows synergy is the most important factor affecting airline merger among
four dimensions, followed by cost, competition and government regulation respectively.
In addition, according to overall weight for eleven separate criteria, alternative infrastructure
was considered the most important criterion among eleven criteria, while growing
environmental pressure was the last one. While this paper might not take into account all
criteria, hopefully this study can offer insight into implication of future airline mergers.
