Based on the grounded theory, 14 subjects were enrolled from the psychiatric outpatients of a medical center in Southern Taiwan to achieve the data saturation, and then, interviewed by semi-structural interview. Each interview was recorded and transcribed. The transcripts were analyzed by constant comparison and the NVivo 9 computer software. The results showed that the recovery process could be divided into five stages: (1) Self-awareness stage: started to be aware of their fear to death and responsibility to life; (2) Seek-for-help stage: seeking help from professional health care and social environmental support; (3) Repetitiveness stage: reappearance of stressors and symptom interference; (4) Adjustment stage: changes in adjustment patterns, searching for one’s own unique emotional exit, deflecting attention from stressors, and re-adjust to stressors; and (5) Acceptance stage: accepting the reality and regaining goals of life. The nursing implication: By analyzing of the recovery process of patients with suicidal attempt history, the results should be able to serve as a reference to the psychiatric nursing staffs about the future clinical intervention model in assisting suicidal patients to recover, adapting to the shadow of suicide, finding their “self” back and facing their life again.
