| Summary: | 碩士 === 華梵大學 === 工業設計學系碩士班 === 100 === In this study, the historical development of Chinese screens was explored in terms of the shape, texture, function, manufacturing methods and their symbolic meanings. Related literature reveals that the function of screens originated from the ancient Chinese architectural features. And it changed from the basic shelter and wind shield to a special article that demonstrates nobility and dignity that can help shape the atmosphere in the space. Furthermore, it has been developed into a luxurious artistic work of rare material and craft technique of painting and calligraphy. In recent years, it has been ransformed into a feng shui artifact that can help block the evil. In addition, many functions have been extended from its feature in assembly and disassembly. The screen has played an important role in modern people’s life.
In this study, the original features were combined with modern people’s needs in interior space. Modern plastic and lighting techniques bring forth new images to the traditional screen. Moreover, the traditional Chinese zodiac pictographics were integrated in the new screen design from which the art of writing and the colors from Chinese feng shui were incorporated for the representation of good lucks. The final screen design demonstrated a totally different image. More importantly, the light-weighted and entertaining characteristics of the modern screen would help enhance the popularity of screen.
