It is significant that employee energy and carbon literacy play a crucial role to the effect of corporate environmental strategies. Energy and carbon literacy is composed of three dimensions, including knowledge, attitude and behavior. In this study, the dimension of knowledge contains knowledge of energy conservation and carbon reduction (ECCR) and ecological concepts. The dimension of attitude includes attitude and value, sensitivity to ECCR, and locus of control respectively. The dimension of behavior is composed of behavioral intention and actual ECCR actions. This study assesses energy and carbon literacy of hotel employees and examines the relationships among the key elements of the energy and carbon literacy. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data from a sample of employees in 21 hotels in Taiwan. In total, 595 questionnaires were obtained and then deleted invalid questionnaires by social desirability scale. Finally, 369 questionnaires were used. The findings revealed that hotel employees generally exhibit a high level of energy and carbon literacy, moreover, there are positive correlations between not only knowledge and attitude but also attitude and behavior. However, negtive correlations between knowledge and behavior indicated that employees with better ECCR knowledge would demonstrate more negtive ECCR behavior. Additionally, the results of this study confirmed that knowledge has a significant impact on behavior, not directly, but mediated by attitude. This suggests that developing positive attitude toward ECCR is the key factor driving employee performing ECCR behavior. Hotels should provide integral ECCR knowledge education since employees with more ECCR knowledge will demonstrate more positive ECCR attitudes that will directly lead to positive ECCR behavior.More specifically, hotel operators need to enhance their employees’ sensitivity, positive attitudes and values towards ECCR to implement ECCR behavior in their daily jobs. While the hotel industry is increasing the awareness of sustainability, this study provides a better understanding of employee energy and carbon literacy to enhance employee involvement in hotel ECCR practices.
