Summary: | 碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 景觀設計學系碩士班 === 99 === It has been said all good designs are therapeutic. One can also say that the purpose of landscape design is to bring bliss to people. As a medium to convey humanistic sentiments, space can be designed to transmit the infinite powers of life as well as to provide room for change of mode, contact with nature and broadening of mind. The goal of this research is to provide means of relaxation for both body and mind through elements of nature and designs of space. In completing our design of a healing garden, we hope to be able to help people alleviate the physical symptoms of their illnesses, relieve their stress, comfort themselves and improve the overall way they feel about their health, all through the use and experience of this designed space.
Through past research of other people, as well as our own case studies of healing gardens, both local and abroad, we have been able to delineate different types of spaces with therapeutic properties, including the cultivation of flowering or fragrant plants, plants attracting birds and butterflies, scenes with flowing water as well as scenes with light and shade under trees or pergolas. We have also arrived at conclusions about the healing effects of and the general public’s preferences for these therapeutic spaces. These conclusions were then employed as guidelines in the design of outdoor spaces. Furthermore, in regard to the use of interactive activities, we have introduced non-intrusive healing practices such as gardening therapy, art therapy, sports therapy, and dance therapy in our design of healing activities.
The main design location for this research project is the Da Feng Park in Xindian. Through the actual design process, we have been able to put together several main ideas in the design of therapeutic spaces. These ideas were then adapted according to their different needs and spatial characteristics to different areas such as the five-sense experience area, special area for wheelchair users, maze challenge area as well as area for pet activities. We have also proposed the values and developmental possibilities of urban therapeutic spaces, aimed at the creation of better and more humane functional spaces in cities based on the psychological needs of their users.
As a result, the healing garden designed in this research project employs natural landscapes as its elements and takes into account people’s preferences, habits as well as the special characteristics of the location. It is optimized for full participation by and interaction with the users and is designed for permanent operation and maintenance. During their activities and involvement, users can readily feel improvements in their overall well-being. Through the analysis and improvement process of different modes of healing space design, we have proposed appropriate strategy in the design of spaces based on the concepts of repair and therapy, and have established the value and viability of installing therapeutic environments in urban spaces.
