Many experiment parameters were compared in different conditions, such as the species of viologen substituent, viologen anion, electrolyte solvent, and the variation of electrolyte concentration, thickness and viscosity. Redox reactions and coloring/bleaching behavior of the prepared ECD were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, step potential, UV/Vis spectrophotometry and impedance. The result shows that redox potential was decreased by increasing chain length of substituent, and the long chain substituent exhibits good light modulation and coloration efficiency. The energy consumption was reduced by increasing electrolyte thickness and viscosity, which saved the energy of 42% at 6wt% PMMA additive. Meanwhile, the gel electrolyte could prevent leakage of electrolyte by breakage of the ECD. The ECD was stable through about 110,000 coloring/bleaching cycles performed between -1V and 0V, which had a light modulation of 75% and the response time of 7s in 2.5cm×2cm size. C. C.
