Description
Summary:碩士 === 大葉大學 === 環境工程學系碩士班 === 99 === The purpose of this study was to apply the concept and techniques of a life cycle analysis. Two versions of a life cycle analysis software, Simapro 7.1, including Eco-Indicator 95 and Eco-indicator 99 were employed as the tools of evaluation. A case study of a corrugating medium mill production was conducted to find the derived potential environmental impacts of the production process and their subsequent study, evaluation and analysis. The results indicated that the main items of evaluation provided by using the Eco-indicator 95 were the energy consumption, greenhouse effect, acidification, eutrophication, heavy metal elements, smog formation in winter time, and solid wastes. Application of the Eco-indicator 99, on the other hand, provided information showing that the major environmental impact of the entire process was more significantly derived from the use of fossil fuels, inhalation of inorganics, climate changes, eco-toxicity, acidification/ eutrophication, and carcinogenic substances. In addition, the impact assessment of Eco-indicator 99 also indicated that the stock preparation system of producing corrugating medium entailed 5.36E4 Pt of damage to human health; 3.56E4 Pt of damage from resource consumption; and 4.2E3 Pt of damage to ecosystem quality. For the papermaking section, however, the respective damages were 9.76E4 Pt, 7.04E4 Pt, and 8.3E3 Pt for the 3 categories. Thus, it appeared that the papermaking sector produced greater damage impact than did the stock preparation sector. Results of the study indicated that with regard to the use of energy and resources, a higher impact was entailed. The main sources of the impact were the burning of coal and consumption of electrical power. Therefore, in order to decrease the impact, the operator must strive for an orientation of lower energy consumption and higher efficiency. If complemented with an amelioration of energy-use structure, then the environmental impact could be efficiently decreased. Proper application of renewable energy sources in the papermaking process shall also produce significant benefits to the environmental impact as well.
