The program was designed to enhance five core competencies: (1) to comprehensively describe physical conditions when seeing a medical doctor; (2) to accurately discern the medication instruction labels when receiving a prescription; (3) to understand the medication schedule and administration methods when taking a prescription; (4) to be the masters of their own bodies when taking medication, and never taking medicine without knowing exactly what it is; (5) to consult a medical doctor or pharmacist for any concern after receiving the prescription. Methods The study was conducted using a quasi-experimental research design. A total of 82 students in fifth and sixth grade in an elementary school of Chiayi county were included and categorized into experimental group (n = 41) and control group (n = 41). The life skills teaching program was applied to students in experimental group for knowledge in five core competencies on medication safety, the students in control group were given the same medication safety teaching program after completing the study and survey. Effectiveness of the program was evaluated using a self-structured questionnaire and then analyzed by SPSS 18 for Windows statistical software. Results Accepts experimental group of the life skills teaching program is significantly higher than the control group in the five core competencies in medication safety. Enhanced capabilities through the program were: (1) describing their physical conditions comprehensively ( t = 9.530, p<.001); (2) accurately discerning the instructions on medication labels ( t = 6.538, p<.001); (3) understanding the medication schedule and administration methods ( t = 6.923, p<.001); (4) being the masters of their own bodies when taking medication, and never taking medicine without knowing what it is ( t = 4.535, p<.001); (5) consulting a medical doctor or pharmacist for any concern regarding the prescription ( t = 9.739, p<.001). Our findings can be considered as reference guides to develop teaching programs on medication safety and group health education for school nurses and health education professionals in the community.
