The main research objectives include: First, to comprehend the current participation status of college students in aquatic sports. Second, to understand the background variables that affect college students’ participation in aquatic sports. Third, to identify the factors that hinder the participation of college students in aquatic sports. Fourth, to compare hindering factor differences in aquatic sport participation among college students with different background variables. This study adopted the stratified sampling survey method using questionnaires to collect data from the college students at Chungyu Institute of Technology in 2010 school year. A total of 600 questionnaires were issued with 542 valid samples returned, resulting in an effective rate of 90%. The data were processed by descriptive analysis, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe's method. The study found that: 1. Swimming is the main event college students choose while engaging in aquatic sports. They swim mainly in open water, and go principally with their friends. Most of them practice aquatic sports 0 to 1 time a week at a cost of less than NT$ 500 per month. 2. The results show that significant gender differences of the college students’ participation in aquatic sports exist in three factors─personal obstacle, interpersonal relationship barrier, and external impediment, but no significant gender difference is found in equipment impediment factor. 3. As to the grade difference of the college students participating in aquatic sports, no significant difference is found in personal obstacle, interpersonal relationship barrier, external impediment, and equipment impediment factors. 4. The study also show the between-group differences of students’ participation are significant in interpersonal relationship barrier, and equipment impediment factors, but no significant differences are found in both personal obstacle, and external impediment factors.
