《Highwater》written by Lee Gerlach, and further discussion of the
translation, strategies and techniques applied, along with criticisms of
Gerlach’s translation from Chinese poems.
The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 provides the
purpose and motive of the study and gives a brief introduction of both the
author and the content of the source poetry. Chapter 2 focuses on the
author’s translation strategy and translating process. Chapter 3 is the
translation of the source poetry. Chapter 4, the main body of the thesis,
analyzes the problems the author encounters and probes into the
application of translation theories and techniques to the translation work.
This Chapter also suggests an appropriate method to evaluating the
translation of poems. Chapter 5 concludes with a summary of the author’s
experience in translating the poetry and offers some suggestions for
translators.
