This study adopted the phenomenological method and recruited 14 new nurses from a medical center in the northern part of Taiwan. Data were collected by depth interviews and observation. The core concept of the study was that new nurses’ experience of implementing remains care just like transforming a caterpillar into a butterfly. It included four themes : (1) When reviewing it, the process was full with difficulties and challenges. Even shocked with patients’ death, the new nurses had to suppress their sadness and completed the job first. (2) Always hoping that the solution might be just waiting at the next corner. The new nurses applied the problem-solving or emotion-oriented coping strategies to take the pressure and impact they had. (3) Developing profound thoughts on life and death. Although reluctantly accepting the fact the life vanishes so easily just the same as the wind blows out the candle, the new nurses form more mature attitude toward life and death. (4) Reflections and suggestions. Due to lack of training at school, the new nurses often felt bewildering when they first time carried out the remains care. Moreover, some new nurses thought it is hard to share others with their especial mysterious experience. They were afraid of being not understood. Overall, more caring and assistance in time from the clinical supervisors was suggested. The results of the study showed that the new nurses need more appropriate assistance and positive support to help them overcome the toughness to implement the remains care. Once the new nurses have learned better strategies to perform the practice, it is believed that their care quality as well as professional commitment will get improved. Y. W.
