Forty compounds were isolated from the dried roots of E. formosana (15.00 kg). Thirty-five compounds were determined by spectral analysis and compared with authentic literatures. They are included ellagic acid (1), 3,3’-di-O-methylellagic acid (2), 3,3’,4,4’-tetra-O-methylellagic acid (3), 3,3’-di-O-methylellagic acid 4’-O-β-xylopyranoside (4), 3,3’-di-O-methylellagic acid 4’-O-β- glucoside (5), 3,3’-di-O-methylellagic acid 4’-O-β-arabinopyranoside (6), 3’-O-methyl-3,4-methylenedioxy ellagic acid (7), gallic acid (8), methyl gallate (9), methyl brevifolincarboxylate (10), brevifolin (11), phyllanthusiin E (12), dehydrochebulic acid trimethyl ester (13), octacosyl ferulate (14), β-sitosterol (15), β-sitosteryl-3-O-glucoside (16), β-sitostenone (17), ergosterol peroxide (18), aurantiamide acetate (19), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (20), scopoletin (21), euoniside (22), 6-methoxy-7,8-methylenedioxycoumarin (23), helioscopinolide E (24), isopimara-7,15-dien-3-one (25), epi-manool (26), larixol (27), euphol (28), glutinone (29), cycloart-23- ene-3,25-diol (30), tirucalla-8,25-diene-3,24-diol (31), quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnoside (32), kaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnoside (33), 4-methyl-5,6-dihydropyran-2-one (34) and 1,3,4,6-tetra-O-galloyl-β-D-glucopyranose (35). The major compounds of E. formosana were polyphenols and terpenoids. The isolated compounds were evaluated their anti-inflammatory bioactivities. The results of anti-inflammatory activity showed that methyl brevifolincarboxylate (10), brevifolin (11) and larixol (27) have significant inhibitory activities on the release of superoxide anion in fMLP/CB-activated human neutrophils with IC50 values 0.68 ± 0.18, 1.39 ± 0.12 and 3.81 ± 0.43 μM, respectively.
