ESRD patients need renal replacement therapy (RRT) to maintain their life. Hemodialysis (HD), a kind of RRT, is a complicated process in which requires multiple data management and corresponding care plans. The introduction of electronic medical information system into HD is to provide high-quality treatments. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of electronic medical information systems on the medical quality of HD patients. In this retrospective and longitudinal analysis, a total of 1,135 subjects receiving HD from March, 2006 at the North District of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital were enrolled. According to the introducing time of electronic medical information system, the subjects were divided into two groups. Statistical methods were applied to analyze the difference between study groups according to patient’s basic demographic variables, medical records, and prognoses. The study found that introduction of electronic medication information system into the HD treatment lead to better medical quality, including better vascular access conditions, better HD efficiency, and fewer unusual events during HD among patients. Medical quality, efficacy, and outcomes are inter-related constructs in this study. The quality improvements were found to have better efficacy, including the improvements of anemia, blood pressure, and fluid control. The improvement of efficacy results in better medical outcomes, including higher survival rate, lower dropout rates, and improved life activity scores within three years. K. H.
