| Summary: | 碩士 === 長庚大學 === 中醫學系傳統中醫學 === 99 === The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA) patients would get episodes of breathing cessation or absence of respiratory airflow, and fall in hypoxia status during sleep. The autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system would be abnormal performance, which would cause hypertension, fat and sugar abnormal metabolism, and metabolic syndrome. Because of long term hypoxia, the OSA patients would get cardiovascular diseases and death. Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) therapy is the standard treatment. Oral appliances and surgery are supplemented treatment. Patients' condition will get improved by proper use of nCPAP, but the compliance is not very good.
In recent years, the TCM treatments of OSA were according to the patients’ patterns. The key point is diagnosis of patients’ constitutional patterns. In past, the diagnosis patterns of OSA were according to the doctors’ clinical experience and subjective diagnosis. In order to get more objective basis, this study use the Patient-self -assessment questionnaire of Wang’s TCM constitutional scale.
We have surveyed 40 moderate-to-severe OSA patients at the clinic in the sleep center from April to June, 2011. The main distribution of ages was among 30 to 60 years old. The main constitutional patterns are Phlegm-Dampness, Qi-deficiency, Yin-deficiency, and Dampness-Heat. At the same time, we also observed that the patient having the biased constitution were with higher Apnea-Hypopnea Index, Body Mass Index, and much worse quality of life. In the future, we can draw up the corresponding treatment for the OSA patients having the biased constitution, and further study or adjuvant therapy for these patients.
