However, reportage was forced to hunker down before it was fully developed due to Sino-Japanese War and changes in political environment. Only until the 1970s when Gao Xin Jang promoted reportage in the “Literature section of China Times,” it was popular and developed again. In the paper, the research target was the reportage work of Gu Mong Ren. From the stage developments of reportage in Taiwan, the effect of Gu Mong Ren’s reportage work on the society at the time and the status and importance of Gu Mong Ren in Taiwan’s reportage history are explored. Moreover, the theories from the book “Genius Loci” (1995) (which means Spirit of place in English) written by Christian Norberg-Schulz were used as the research method to discuss the space structure and the spirit of place in Gu Mong Ren’s work from the views of people and place and understand the relationship between human and nature. It was found in the research that Gu Mong Ren’s family background and living environment and the society at the time affected his childhood and writing process and are closely related to the topic choice of his reportage work. The content of his reportage work contains deep feeling and shows strong infectivity. Due to his preciseness and effort in his work, he set the role model for reportage and has been highly recognized for a long time. In view of Gu Mong Ren’s effort and contribution in reportage, his work can be said to be the aesthetic model for reportage, which in turn established his special status in reportage. He achieved his goals in life and spoke what others wouldn’t dare speak. In addition to showing real people, object and events in society in his reportage work, Gu Mong Ren is very careful in his own way when writing and re-appearing geographical landscape. Gu Mong Ren is good at using the geographical environment of natural landscape as the starting point, along with historical variables, to describe local settlements and cultural activities. He writes touching landscape with beautiful words and makes every corner a meaningful place. The place where people live in everyday is closely related to their lives and is the most important cultural landscape as people’s sense of direction, sense of place and sense of identification are established from living environment. His geographical landscape reappearance shows that natural landscape and cultural landscape are interdependent and that they form an interdependent and inseparable relationship.
