Railway became an important implement that led Taiwan to modernization. However, as time changes and technology evolves, the role played by railway and trains in society have transformed gradually. In Taiwan, the rise of civilian travel activity is closely connected to the construction of railway transport. In view of the publications such as “Taiwan Railway Travel Information” published during Japanese Occupation, “Chang-liu” published after the war and “Railway Travel” published after 2000, they prove railway travel in Taiwan had been popular for a long time. Under different era, travelers who use railway transport as the travel tool have different goals and visions and railway travel articles show different implications. Based on his deep affection towards railways, Zhi-wen Hong had been devoted in railway cultural preservation activities since he was very young. While in search and discovering railways in Taiwan, he began writing about his railway travel experiences with in-depth historical aspect. Moreover, his rich railway literary work built up complete Taiwan railway knowledge in terms of history and arts. His work not only is the first in the railway cultural research, it also started the trend of writing about railway travel after 1990s. Ke-xiang Liu’s railway travel articles opened a new chapter for 21st century railway travel. His railway travel articles are not just about the description of railway, natural landscape surrounded the railway station and people and scenery are also illustrated in his articles. The encounter and conversation with people on trains are often important elements in railway travel. His care to people and thoughts about environmental ecology and life are often shown in his work. The development of railway travel during Japanese Occupation, after the war and in the 1990s and railway travel publications published in the eras were summarized to discuss the presentation and transition of railway travel books in Taiwan as time evolved. After that, the implications of topics and writing features of the railway travel books of two modern railway travel writers, Zhi-wen Hong and Ke-xiang Liu, were discussed. The two different types of writers used railway as the main body and wrote their own railway travel experiences. Although their writing strategies were different, they all showed their care and identification to the land of Taiwan and demonstrated writing features that are different to modern travel literature.
