There have been very few studies that empirically examine the causation and typologies of marriage violence. This study incorporates quantitative analysis into qualitative data derived from in-depth interviews. Statistical analyses were conducted based on data derived from 3,683 cases from official records of the Tainan Police Bureau between June 1999 and December 2007. Latent Class Analysis was employed to categorize the causes of marriage violence offenses. Moreover, Cox regression model was further utilized to analyze the predicting power of the causes for marriage violence. To supplement the understanding of the underlying causes of marriage violence, in-depth interviews were conducted with four police officers who handled marriage violence cases and five women who were victims of marriage violence. It was found that there are five main typologies for the causation of marriage violence offense, which include: (1) a mixture of varying problems; (2) problems of unmatched characters; (3) emotional problems; (4) problems regarding financial issues or daily life conflicts; and (5) problems of addiction on alcohol or drugs. It was also found there was not just a single cause that provides explanation of marriage violence offense. The protection effect of protection order on victims was close to be statistically significant when victims filed the first protection order; the protection effect was the best and achieved the significant level when the victims filed the second protection order. The protection effect of protection order declined after the victims filed the second protection order. Alcohol use was found to be associated with an increased risk of marriage violence.
