In this thesis, we have designed and synthesized two C3 symmetrical pyridyl- acetylene ligands as bridging-tridentates, 1,3,5-tris(3-pyridylethynyl)benzene (L1) and 1,3,5-tris(4-pyridylethynyl)benzene (L2), as well as two carboxylic acid ligands, biphenyl-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid (bpda) and 2,6-naphthalene-dicarboxylic acid (2,6-na), for the purpose to react with Cd(NO3)2 to give a series of porous coordination polymers. The complexes were studied in this thesis containing [Cd3(L1)2(bpda)3]n (1)、[Cd2(L2)2(2,6na)2]n (2)、 [Cd2(L2)(bpda)2]n (3)、 [Cd3(L2)2(2,6na)3]n (4), which are isolated and structurally characterized by the X-ray diffraction study. The X-ray analysis reveals the formation of 2D network for 2 and 3D networks for 1, 3, and 4, respectively. All of these complexes are composed of either dimeric or trimeric second building uints. Their thermal stabilities and photoluminescence behavior have also been investigated. Complex 1 and 3 are found to have reversible phase transformation after heating and later exposed to mother liquid vapor. Complex 2 and 4 have good thermal stabilities, up to 250oC.
