Summary: | 碩士 === 元智大學 === 資訊管理學系 === 98 === Recent research indicates the common problem of medication errors in psychiatric hospitals. Medication errors may be related to physicians’ prescription, as well as nurses’ dispensing and administrating patients’ medications. To reduce medication errors, it is crucial to develop a mobile nursing information system which provides real-time medication list verification and drug identification for nurses conducting medication dispensing and administration.
In this study, we develop a PDA-based nursing information system which uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) to identify patients’ status and medication plans during medication dispensing and administration. When an inpatient’s status is identified, the mobile system automatically communicates with the hospital information system (HIS) to verify medication prescription and medication schedules in real time. Additionally, the mobile system communicates with the drug information system to acquire drugs’ pictures, doses and administration routes, and it also communicates with the nursing information system to browse patient care work lists and treatment records.
Clinical evaluations indicate that (1) the use of this developed mobile nursing system can reduce medication dispensing errors due to changes of medication orders; (2) patients’ medication safety is improved by PDA-aided drug identification, dose indication and administration routes; (3) PDA-aided nursing work lists and treatment records can help nurses perform medication administration timely and correctly. In conclusions, this mobile-based RFID nursing information system can effectively strengthen medication safety for inpatients in a psychiatric hospital.
