To maintain its leading status in TFT-LCD manufacturing, the government has established many favorable policies for the TFT-LCD companies. Polarizer sheet is among one of the essential components that will significantly determine the quality of the TFT-LCD products. The cost of polarizer sheet occupies approximately ten percent of a 32-inch LCD TV product. Currently, very few manufacturers in Taiwan are capable of producing High Anti-Glare Film (HAGF), which is essential in producing polarizer sheets. Thus, the majority of HAGF are provided from abroad, particularly Japan. For a polarizer sheet company to maintain its competitiveness, it is very important for management to acquire high quality HAGF within reasonable cost. The thesis aims to evaluate three Japan HAGF suppliers, with the information obtained from the management of the case company. Thus, the research results on supplier rating can provide the company a reference in purchasing decision. In the study, two multi-criteria decision techniques, AHP (analytic hierarchy process) and fuzzy AHP, are applied to evaluate the three suppliers. Two fuzzy AHP methods are combined to deal with the three-level hierarchical attributes decision problem. Chang’s extent analysis method is applied to determine the relative attribute weights in the upper two levels, whereas Cheng’s entropy-based method is used to evaluate the performance of the suppliers with respect to the second level attributes. Our study concludes the following: (1) Although the two AHP methods obtain different rankings, two principal criteria – service ability and component quality – are the same; (2) the overall supplier ranking is B A C, which coincides with the management’s viewpoint; (3) the evaluation on various attributes can assist the company in deciding purchase quantity in the context of risk diversification.
