It is still unclear whether or not dialysis patients have a high receptivity towards hepatitis C virus (HCV) and mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp). Therefore, this study has collected 227 specimens from a certain regional hospital in Taiwan (including 109 blood samples from dialysis patients and 118 blood samples from non-dialysis patients) to conduct HCV and Mp antibody tests and their related blood biochemical items, respectively with the serum samples. Among the tests were total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), GOT, GPT, total bilirubin (T-Bili), direct bilirubin (D-Bili), alkaline phosphatase (Alk-P), and r-glutamyl transferase (r-GT). The results showed that there was a significant increase in dialysis and non-dialysis groups being affected by HCV and the risk was high (38.53% dialysis vs 9.32% non-dialysis; ORs, 6.098; 95% Cl, 2.936-12.662, P <0.0001), and the HCV infected group was found to have a high infection rate and high risk towards Mp (39.62%dialysis vs 18.39% non-dialysis, ORs, 2.912 ; 95%CI,1.489-5.696, P <0.0001). Besides, there was a significant increase in TC (168.28±3.68 vs 191.52±3.41 mg/dl, P <0.0001),HDL-C (37.72±1.35 vs 49.53±1.18 mg/dl, P <0.0001) and LDL-C (168.28±3.68 vs 191.52±3.41 mg/dl, P <0.0001) on dialysis and non-dialysis patients; but there was a significant decrease in TG (183.94±11.50 vs 129.07±7.49 mg/dl, P <0.001) and ALK-P (88.38±4.94 vs 59.47±1.84 U/L, P <0.001).Dialysis patients can indeed be infected by HCV and Mp more easily than non-dialysis patents, and likely to cause significant changes in blood biochemistry. The variances in results among dialysis group can serve as a basis for further research, track counseling or medical healthcare improvement measures in the future.
