Design: A quasi-experimental design with two non-randomly assigned groups, control and experimental groups. Setting: A general surgery unit at a large teaching hospital in Taiwan. Sample: Each group included 60 women with breast tumor (<4 cm) and totally 120 women participated in the study. Methods: The control group received only traditional information providing and all self-filled questionnaires were given to the women one day before operation in the unit. The data were collected during the first period from September, 2009 to February, 2010. The experimental group additionally received information pamphlet regarding breast surgery and invited to fill out two questionnaires of uncertainty and level of breast cancer surgery knowledge before admission into the unit. All questionnaires were filled out one day before the surgery in the unit and the data were collected from February, 2010 to June, 2010. Main research variables: Uncertainty, informed consent satisfaction,, level of breast cancer surgery knowledge, information resources, and information needs. Findings: Participants’ levels of breast surgery knowledge in the experimental group (mean=8.27, SD= 1.635) was significantly higher than those in the control group (mean= 4.6, SD=2.346 ), P=0.000. The post-test (mean=50.38) of the experimental group women’s uncertainty was significantly lower than pre-test(mean 53.13), P=0.016. Informed consent satisfaction was non-significantly different between the control (88.3%) and experimental group (87.3%). The women’s information resources mainly came from doctor (90%) in the control group; however, the experimental group women’s information resources were from doctor and information pamphlet equally (76%)..Information needs of two groups were not significantly different. Conclusions : Women with breast tumor had high level information needs before operation. However, both the control group and pre-test of experimental group showed low level of breast surgery knowledge. To provide surgery information pamphlet to women with breast tumor before operation can significantly improve their knowledge level of breast surgery, and decrease their uncertainty. Implications: Surgery information pamphlet combined with doctor’s oral information providing is a cost-effect intervention for improving level of breast surgery knowledge and decreasing women’s uncertainty before breast surgical intervention.
