This year is the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth and the year of “International Chopin Piano Competition”, people around the world held series of concerts in honor of Chopin. What’s more, the Polish Government officially announced the year of 2010 to be the “Chopin year”. Based on this concept, the new Chopin Museum officially inaugurated on March 1st 2010, in Warsaw, Poland. The author chooses to study The Second Piano Sonata for commemorating Chopin’s birth as the repertoire for the graduate concert for master degree, with a view to better understanding the inner world of Chopin’s as well as celebrating the meaningful day of Chopin’s 200th birthday with people all over the world. To study Chopin’s second Piano Sonata, the author focuses the research on the performance interpretation. Besides the musical analysis of the sonata and the input of personal interpretation, three respected pianists’ performance will be analyzed objectively. The thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the purpose of this research, the subject and the research methods. In Chapter 2 is about Chopin’s life, the style of his piano compositions, and the background of Chopin’s second piano sonata. In Chapter 3, the musical analysis of Chopin’s second piano sonata will be conducted, including the interpretation of the author’s performance on this work as well as the methods of practice. In Chapter 4, the author will objectively analyze the three pianist’s style of interpretation based on their recordings.
