Insulin sensitivity is known to decrease with advancing age. Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to determine the insulin sensitivity and autonomic nerve activity in elderly former elite female basketball players. Method: This study consist three groups including young basketball players (Y, age 17.9±0.42, N= 8), elderly former basketball players without regular exercise training (O, age 56.7±2.14, N=6), and elderly former basketball players with regular exercise behavior (OE, age 57.2±1.2, N=6). Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and heart rate variability (HRV) were monitored for all subjects. Oxygen saturation and total hemoglobin concentration of brain and muscle were measured by Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Results: The results showed that body weight and BMI were significantly greater in O and OE group than the young subjects. Glucose and insulin levels were significantly lower in OE than that in O group. HF of Y group was higher than that of O and OE group. However, LF/HF was not significantly different between the Y, O and OE groups. Brain oxygen saturation of O was significantly higher than Y and OE groups. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that glucose tolerance and brain oxygen saturation were well maintained with regular exercise, but vagal activity was lower for the elderly former basketball players with regular exercise.
