As an author with many works to his credit, Liang Shiqiu, by diligently pursuing his studies and reading widely, has made brilliant achievements in many areas as in literature translation, research and introduction about Western literary criticism, literary review and essay writing. He has won unanimous praise at home and abroad and is known as the “national treasure-level master in literature.” Taking the essays of Liang Shiqiu as the research topic, the researcher studies the cultural personality and thoughts of Liang Shiqiu in the first part of the thesis. Having inherited the tradition of the Ming and Qing essays and absorbed the representation technique of Western essays, he has formed a unique style of his own which displays a strong personality and artistic charms. The researcher studies his concept of creation and cultural personality deeply influenced by the Western Classicism and Chinese traditional Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. The second part of the thesis centers on Liang Shiqiu’s theories of literary criticism. Liang Shiqiu is the first scholar who systematically researches on and introduces Western literary theory since the May 4th Movement. He attempts to establish his own criticism concept by explaining and evaluating the history of Western literary criticism with the hope of constructing a complete system of Literary Criticism under the framework of Neo-humanism. Liang Shiqiu’s Construction of Literary Criticism and commentary on the history of Western criticism is unique in modern China, and he also exceeds other critics in terms of the accomplishments achieved. His cool-minded and wise vision expresses his worship and care for the traditional culture. This unique perspective breaking away from the mainstream of the times deserves particular praise in the anti-tradition current of the May 4th Movement. We have seen in him the modern embodiment of Confucian humanistic ideal and value system. Through the study of the essays of Liang Shiqiu and his theories of literary criticism, the thesis explores the unique life sentiment and life realm which linger between the tradition and the modernity, classism and romanticism under the influence of the strong national style. It also explores his virtues and wisdom originating from the Western Classicism, so as to find out the features of the cultural personality and the double wisdom of the intellectuals of the former generation after the two-way communication between the East and the West. And these are the focus of this study. Key words: cultural personality; Confucianism; humor; double wisdom; Classicism; Neo-Romanticism 李瑞騰 2010 學位論文 ; thesis 226 zh-TW
