The study makes an attempt to turn the abstract concept of the sustainable city development into the concrete description of spatial appearances. The research for this study was done in the city of Banciao. Two aspects were discussed — the sustainable city and the sustainable community — in order to examine the viewpoints of community leaders and their feelings toward city compactness as well as their level of satisfaction with urban space and community environment. A questionnaire and interviews were used in this study and the measuring instrument was the level of satisfaction with city and community development in the Banciao questionnaire. It contained two dimensions — the urban space and the community environment. The response effective questionnaires were 196. Five board chairmen from the community development association were chosen as subjects in Banciao. Purposive sampling and the results from the interview survey were used in the questionnaire survey. The data was analyzed using the Pearson product-moment correlation, t-test, one way-ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. The main results of this study were as follows: 1. The community leaders’ relationship to the close community of a compact city was apparent from the questionnaires. However, the level of satisfaction of the city and the community environment were both moderate. 2. The community leaders showed different emphases on the close community in a compact city, the satisfaction of the city and the satisfaction of the community environment. Between education, current position, and service area, there were significant differences. In particular, the satisfaction of the city showed a significant difference. 3. The close community in a compact city and the satisfaction of the city showed a moderate correlation. The satisfaction of the city and the satisfaction of the community environment also showed a moderate correlation. However, the other two comparisons of sharing a close community and the satisfaction of the community environment showed a low correlation. 4. The five capitals and the satisfaction of urban space showed a moderate correlation. Furthermore, we could significantly predict the overall satisfaction with urban space in Banciao with the three variables of human capital, construction capital and social capital. Satisfaction of the city made up 48% of the total variance. In conclusion, the results and discussion of this study could be presented to the Urban Planning Bureau as an important reference.
