She had experienced the drastic change of Taiwanese society and carefully observed the people of different social levels. She described various kinds of personalities from women’s perspective in a very detailed way. She was good at the deep depiction of situation of times and people’s situation and their inner world. Through realistic description, JiJi was capable of adding more meaningful content to ordinary subjects, which has revealed her sincere and deep care for life. Starting with a writer’s life experience, the author had, through her attitude toward love and her thinking background, created a variety of characteristics for her creations. The author used her novel characters as research subjects and conducted an across-the-board exploration of the personalities in her novels using the method of classification and integration. The purpose of this study was to research the characters in JiJi’s novels and explore her skills in shaping the characteristics of those characters and her artistry to further grasp the implications of the author’s creations, observe more aspects of times, and affirm the value of the characters in her novels, hereby to confirm her place in literature. Following is the chapter summary: Chapter 1 Prologue The purpose of the study was first explained before reviewing the criticisms of JiJi’s novels and summarizing the results of relevant studies. After that, the study scope was defined, and the study method and the summaries of each chapter were briefly described. Chapter 2 JiJi’s life and literary career The styles and the changes in the content of JiJi’s creations in each stage of her life and literary career were described. Chapter 3 The subjects of JiJi’s novels and the changes of Taiwanese society The relations between the subjects of JiJi’s novel creations were discussed from the perspectives of the changing relations between cities and rural villages, the values, and love and marriage in the process of social changes. Chapter 4 The main personalities of the characters in JiJi’s novels The major personalities of the male and female characters in JiJi’s novels were analyzed. Chapter 5 The analysis of JiJi’s skills in her description of novel characters The personality types described in JiJi’s novels were analyzed using examples to identify their common characteristics. JiJi’s writing skills in her shaping novel characters were analyzed from the perspectives of the presentation of those characters, the description of those characters’ inner world and the languages used by those characters. The significance of times presented by the characters in JiJi’s novels was also explored.
