The purpose of this novel design is to apply in the occasion of requiring cylindrical output motion. For example, the winding machine of textile machinery needs to produce spool of yarns with different shapes. Another example, the cotton-candy machine needs to wind up different shapes of cotton candy to attract children. Through the observation of these above-mentioned devices, their outputs all require motions of revolution, rotation about its own axis and reciprocating motion. Therefore, this dissertation presents a conceptual design of applying spatial compound planetary gear train in design a 3-DOF mechanism. The characteristics of this 3-DOF mechanism is that it’s output motion of revolution, rotation about its own axis and up-down reciprocating motion can be controlled simultaneously, so the output motion can be constrained in a cylindrical working space. With three degree-of-freedom, this design can yield different axis-symmetric shapes of output motion by coordinating those three different input motions. The kinematic equations of the novel planetary gear trains are also derived, and its dynamic simulation has been performed to prove their compliance with the requirements of the design.
