Description
Summary:碩士 === 南台科技大學 === 應用英語系 === 98 === The purpose of the study is to investigate students’ needs and expectations of Business English courses from students’ and instructors’ perspectives. The research method of the study includes both qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method in this study includes interviews with 7 course instructors and 10 students. In addition, the researcher observed two Business English courses for a semester. The quantitative method in this study is a survey questionnaire delivered to 219 participants. Three research questions are explored in this study: (1) What are Business English instructors’ and students’ understandings of Business English? (2) What are students’ needs and expectation of Business English courses? And (3) what are Business English instructors’ beliefs in teaching Business English? The results of the study indicated that (1) Business English instructors and students believed that Business English is the English which is used in the job markets. In addition, Business English includes both business knowledge and English language knowledge. (2) Students who enroll Business English courses need to improve their English ability immediately and contact with various business-related resources in order to develop their business awareness. Students also expected that taking Business English courses can improve their competitive ability in the job markets. (3) Business English instructors generally believed that the development of English ability is primary and business knowledge is secondary in the Business English courses. When Business English instructors encountered problems of business knowledge, they usually surfed the Internet to collect the resources they need. In addition, most of the Business English instructors suggest that the teaching hours and relevant courses should be expanded because the current resources of teaching are not enough for students to study Business English well.
