A Format can be defined as an intellectual expression whose purpose is to be a container for broadcasting or radio programmes. The market of formats increased a lot in the last decade, and most of the shows we see everyday on TV are based on formats. The possibility of developing a container for a TV show makes it easy to be sold in many countries without changing its characteristics; the details of the “container” will then be filled with different contents or details according to the culture of the country or of the region in which the show will be broadcasted. This is the reason why formats contributed a lot to the globalization of the broadcasting business, and also the reason why the market of these services/goods grew that much recently. The market of formats continues to grow despite legal uncertainty, and format purchasing is popular with broadcasters, due notably to the large cost savings associated with avoiding the risk of inventing something original, the illusion for national audiences of watching a successful local production and the potential for the concept behind a certain TV show to be successful if tailored for a particular market.
