Thence, more active therapies could be provided for poorer prognosis in the nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, besides the mentioned treatments. Investigating galectin-1 expression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma survival was to more precisely predict the prognoses. Materials & Methods: The 117 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients were inscribed From 2000 to 2006. In the formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens, the correlation between Galectin-1 expression (in the nucleus and cytoplasm) and disease specific survival was immunohistochemistry-analyzed. Results: Galectin-1 low expression (p=.0041) in the nucleus and Galectin-1 over-expression (p=.0402) in the cytoplasm predicted poorer survival; Galectin-1 over-expression(p=.0467) in the nucleus, poorer metastasis free survival. In Cox regression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Galectin-1 low-expression in the nucleus independently predicted disease specific survival (p=.0060); Galectin-1 over-expression in the cytoplasm, metastasis free survival (p=.0384) independently. Conclusion: Galectin-1 expression in the nucleus and cytoplasm was disease specific survival and metastasis free survival correlated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and can be a crucial prognostic factor for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
