However, the product can be user-hostile when it is equipped with too many functions. If the new technology is so complicated, the product launched can be too difficult to use, and our life is also becoming complicated. It turns out that the improvement of technology actually creates contradiction. In the design process, besides the improved function and the innovative outer appearance, returning to simplicity needs to be taken into account: to reduce unnecessary design elements and to avert the complication as using the product. The developments of product design flourishes with the technological advances. More and more functions are provided in one product, however, increases chances of mistake as the usage perplexes the user. In addition, many products are designed “simple” conceptually without any related conventional standard being followed. This research focuses on the idea of “Minus thinking”. Extracted from past reports, the idea will be applied on design, to eliminate all the excessive or use-disturbing elements, present a concrete idea for design reference and offer an intuitive way of use for people. The research reviews the design history and discusses several theories including “Arts and Crafts Movement” , “Modernism, Minimalism” , “Minimalism” , “Zen Thinking” , “Universal Design” , and “Green Design”. The conclusion will be further presented regarding theories referred above. “Minus thinking” emphasizes simplicity and implicit structure as the signature technique, and the mathematical logic “Minus” is applied on design to display the product’s characteristic derived from extraction, and thereby to meet the demand of the user. Furthermore, the choice of material should be in compliance with the rule of environmental sustainability. According to the analysis for past reports, five principles are generated as the specific guideline for design in the future: simplicity, miniaturization of the surface, being user-friendly along with the highly identifiable operating interface, environmental preservation and energy saving. 碩士 === 樹德科技大學 === 應用設計研究所 === 98 === The advanced technology brings more convenience in our life, and a wide variety of products introduced are also impressive.
