Summary: | 碩士 === 東吳大學 === 政治學系 === 98 === The baseball has been viewed as Taiwanese national sport for long. The nation’s first professional league was inaugurated in 1989. The joy was short-lived, however, after a major betting scandal. In recent years, it has been mired in repeated match-fixing scandals. The latest scandal is the fifth time in the past 20 years that professional baseball players in Taiwan have been investigated for throwing games. Owing to the professional baseball is the engine of baseball in Taiwan, the fans of professional baseball staged a parade rally around the Presidential Office to urge the government to hold a national baseball conference to save the nation’s favorite sport.
This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of preventing game-fixed mechanism within the rejuvenating baseball plan proposed by Sports Affairs Council (SAC) of Executive Yuan. In this paper, we not only use secondary data analysis method to clarify the purposes and the contents of the official proposal but also use interview method to collect the opinions of stakeholders about the effectiveness of the preventing game-fixed mechanism proposed by the SAC.
We interview the officers of the SAC and the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), the coaches and players of the professional baseball teams, and academics to acquire more comprehensive information from the interviewees. Finally, we propose this paper’s findings about the effectiveness of this plan.
Depends on policy arguments, the result of this study shows that the policy claim about “to crack down on crime and croupier”, “enhanced player management”, and “reform of triple-baseball” of rejuvenating baseball plan can prevent point shaving.
Respondents also provided suggestion about “sport lottery”, “security of players”, “human right of players”, and “triple-baseball”. But they also believed that the success of rejuvenation baseball plan is directly connected with determination.
