Bunun`s Home Nature: A Native`s Point of View

碩士 === 靜宜大學 === 生態學研究所 === 98 === Ecology regards Nature as home (oikos) to all beings. However, for those peoples like the Bunun who have no word and concept of “Nature,” what is Nature? How do the Bunun say about Nature? These are core research questions in the thesis. This thesis will develop discourses from three aspects. First of all, I, myself as a Bunun, start to explore the relevant origins and meanings of words through doing the syntactic, semantic, morphological analyses to conceive “asang” as Bunun’s home. Further, I propose an idea of “home-nature.” Secondly, taking the sun-shooting legend, which could indicate the watershed of Bunun’s eras, as a narrative background, i will discuss the Bunun’s understandings of the worldview from the essential meaning of “Bunun” (human beings). The discussion will involve Bunun, Qanitu, Sidoq, Deqanin, and the relationships between each other. Thirdly, I propose one daily word “taki” as a key word to explore the Bunun’s home-nature. Taki means not only “inhabit” but also “poop.” Thus, here comes an interesting question: What are the connections between “taki” (inhabit and poop) and the imagination of Bunun’s home-nature? In the process of exploring and discussing Bunun’s home-nature, food, especially millet, could not be overlooked. Food, as Bunun’s material practice, plays a core role in traditional Bunun’s home-nature. Based on food, Bunun people construct a holistic concept of asang and variously sophisticated links between humans and Nature. Keywords: Nature, Bunun, asang, taki, home-nature
