Applications of the Structural Particles “的”“地” and “得” in Modern Chinese
Abstract
Keywords: Modern Chinese、Structural Particle、Teaching Chinese as a Second Language
The structural particles “的”、“地” and “得” are used with extremely high frequency as function words in modern Chinese. They are mostly attached to words, phrases or sentences in different placements to indicate grammatical relations between this attachment and the head words in a sentence. These three words, although with the same pronunciation-the neutral tone “de”, each has its own syntactic rules and corresponding meaning when applied either in a phrase or in a sentence. It is often confusing for L2 Chinese learners to distinguish among these three structural particles and use each correctly. Misuse and mix-use of these three words seem prevalent among L2 Chinese learners.
This study focuses on the discussion of grammatical errors of the three structural particles in accordance with pedagogical grammar and the theory of second language learning, delving into the patterns of deviations through the error analysis and the integration of practical examples. From objective and subjective points of view, this study sums up and clarifies the meanings of these three structural particles, with the hope of building the correct perception and in order to provide references and suggestions to Chinese teaching.
