The samples of this investigation are the students, enrolled after the school year of 2008, from the 1st to 3rd grade of the ordinary courses of three public senior high schools including Taipei County San-Chong High School, National HsinChuang Senior High School, and Taipei County Ching Shui High School. We take 2 classes from each grade of each school, i.e. 18 classes totally from these three schools. 810 students are sampled, and 682 valid questionnaires are retrieved. We attempt to understand the relations between the self-concepts of the senior high school students and their career developments.
The independent variables of this study include the personal backgrounds of the senior high school students, i.e. gender, grade, and school, and their family backgrounds, i.e. family structure and family socioeconomic status; the dependent variables include self-concept, i.e.physical self-concept, academic self-concept, psychological self-concept, family self-concept and social self-concept, and career development, i.e. career feeling, career concept, career exploration, and career planning. This piece of research aims at:
1. Understands the current career developments and self-concepts of the senior high school students with different personal and family background variables.
2. Understands the differences between self-concepts of the senior high school students with different personal and family background variables.
3. Understands the differences between career developments of the senior high school students with different personal and family background variables.
4. Understands the relations between self-concepts and career developments of the senior high school students.
5. Understands the prediction model of the career developments.
We employ questionnaires and collect data by purposive sampling. SPSS 12.00 is used for data analysis, and the data is processed by statistic methods such as frequency distributions, percentage, Chi-square test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and multiple stepwise regression.
This investigation thus reveals the conclusions as follows:
1. There are significant differences in physical self-concept, family self-concept, and overall scale of self-concept for the senior high school students with different genders.
2. There are significant differences in family self-concept for the senior high school students with different family structures. Furthermore, the family self-concept for the senior high school students with two-parent family are higher than those with single-parent and other family.
3. There are significant differences in career exploration and career planning for the senior high school students with different genders.
4. There are significant differences in career concept and career planning for the senior high school students in different grades.
5. Every pared relations between self-concept, carrer development, and overall scale all reach significant levels and all are positive correlations.
6. According to the multiple stepwise regression results, social self-concept is the most predictive variable. Other variables are, in order, psychological self-concept, academic self-concept, family self-concept, and gender.
Finally, we provide suggestions aiming at the conclusions of self-concept and carrer development to students’ parents, school teachers, students, and future research according to the research results respectively.
