The quality of the holes deeply depends on the variation of the geometric profile of the drills. In order to ensure the quality of products, the manufacturers of micro-drills usually define a high level inspection standard for the measurement of the web thickness. This work has developed an optical inspection system to measure the web thickness of micro drills. The system includes grinding wheel module, motion platform, optical positioning module and optical web thickness measurement module. The motors of those modules are integrated by an electrical control unit. The operation of this system starts from driving the motion platform into the workspace. The optical positioning module then drives the drill so that a pre-determined section of the drill is located at a specific position. Next, an image of the drill’s cross section was taken by the optical web thickness measurement module. Finally, the web thickness can be determined by a series of image processing techniques. The experimental data shows that the measurement error of the inspection system is less than 3μm, and the process to inspect four sections of a drill takes less than 8 minutes.
