Most of their products performance are tested on-field and/or in the wind tunnel; however, the wind turbines’ performance deviate significantly when they are installed on the top of building due to local flow patterns. Therefore, realizing the corresponding performance influence caused by geometrical parameters becomes an urgent need and the goal of this research. At first, the installation position effect to vertical axis wind turbine’s (VAWT’s) performance technique is discussed step by step, by using numerical. The start-up ability, flow pattern, and performance characteristics are compared between the on-field and on the top of building installations. In addition, this investigation also discussed about the flow pattern behind the parapet wall and the performance of VAWT setting up at various locations behind the parapet wall with different height, and results being applied to VAWT on the building’s rooftop. Furthermore, a dimensionless analysis is performed to generalize these entire problems. Finally, a VAWT prototype is fabricated and installed on the flexible experiment platform to measure the power coefficient of wind turbine and make comparison with the corresponding simulation results. In summary, this integrated research successfully combines the simulations and experimental together to provide the capability to estimate the possibility in harvesting wind energy and reliable informations related with installing the wind turbine on the rooftop.
