Firms could easily achieve customer’s need by mass production, inventory management, and quick responses. But there were two disadvantages: they had to face the risk of overproduced inventory and the risk if product didn’t meet customer demand.
In the modern business environment, it’s more complicated than the past. Because of convenient Internet, improvement of manufacturing technology, and the heterogeneity of consumer, firms must shift from mass production to mass customization.
The core of mass customization is module, which combines different standardized interfaces to variety of mix. Through modularity, firms can cut cost, increase product diversity, and fulfill needs of customers.
This research is focus on the development of modules, build up a standardized process model to choose which modules to be use from three sides: customer demand, core technology, and manufacturing process.
