in Zurich, he became acquainted with the silk merchant, Otto Wesendonck, who was
a fan of Wagner and kindly sponsored him at that time. However, Wagner fell in love
with his patron's wife, Mathilde Wesendonck. She wrote five poems for Wagner.
With the inspiration of these poems, he composed the Wesendonck Lieder. These
great pieces combined Wagner’s music with Mathilde’s poems and projected their
emotions of love.
This thesis focuses on the composition background, musical analysis, and performing
interpretation of the Wesendonck Lieder. It consists of five chapters. The first chapter
mentions the research purpose and motivation. Also, the contents and the structure of
this thesis are included. The second chapter expounds Wagner’s biography and love
affairs. To realize how the growing background and affection influence his creation.
In the third chapter, the artistic concepts and the literary perspectives of Wesendonck
Lieder will be discussed. In the fourth chapter, the musical analysis and interpretation
of Wesendonck Lieder enables the further understanding of Wagner’s compositional
techniques. Finally, the fifth chapter is the conclusion of this thesis.
