Junior High School, Taitung County and investigates the
working status, counseling role, working tasks as well as the
current problems a boarder counselor may encounter with a
view to understanding the content of work and working
experience of the boarder counselors and the boarders’ living
condition. This investigation adopted qualitative research; the
source of information comes from interviewing.
Based on the results of the research, the conclusion is
summarized as follows:
I. Current working status of boarder counselors
1. The motive of a novice boarder counselor
The main motive of a novice boarder counselor is that it
was dispatched by the result of the exam and that it is
a stable job.
2. The stress from the work of a boarder counselor and its
solution
It is true that the stress from work of a boarder
counselor does exist. If the school can have more
manpower to allow work shifts, it may effectively reduce
the load; taking holidays off can also relieve the
pressure.
II. The role expectations and the work task of a boarder
counselor
1. The qualifications a boarder counselor should possess
A boarder counselor should possess a loving heart,
patience, a sense of responsibility and sufficient
enthusiasm.

A boarder counselor should play the roles and function
both as a parent and a teacher.
III. The problems a boarder counselor may encounter
1. A boarder counselor does not have all the knowledge of
each subject; therefore, he/she can only help the
boarders with what he/she knows and supervise whether
they have completed their homework. He/she may have
problem instructing academic questions.
2. The problems and difficulties a boarder counselor faces
in counseling the students’ daily lives
It’s pains taking to correct bad living habits. As a result,
a system of efficient regulation in the dormitory should
be implemented.
3. The problems and difficulties a boarder counselor faces
in counseling the students’ behavior
The most difficult problems lie in the counseling manner
and the lack of professional background of the boarder
counselor.
4. The situation referring to the insufficient manpower of
boarder counselors, the hectic working schedule, as well
as the assistance and support from the school
Schools should consider the expansion of counselors
and deploy more officers from Student Affairs Office
taking turns patrolling the dormitories.
5. Other problems and difficulties
Local governments should hold seminars giving boarder
counselors guidance and discipline.
