The banks of the river are densely populated, and household sewage and wastewater enter the river without treatment. The river discharges directly into Keelung Harbor and seriously pollutes the coastal area. The present study was conducted to investigate the nitrogen content of the Tian-Liao River, and determine the factors that control variations in the concentrations of nitrogen species. Samples were collected each month from May 2009 to April 2010 at seven sampling stations along the river. The results show that of the nitrogen species in the Tian-Liao River the percentage concentration of NH4+ was highest. In the rainy season the concentration of NH4+ decreased because of dilution by rainfall. In the dry season there was less rainfall and the river flow was slow, and consequently the concentration of NH4+ increased. In addition, the concentrations of NO3 and DON were low in summer (July and August, 2009) and high in winter (January and February in 2010), indicating seasonal variation in the levels of these nutrients. In terms of spatial distribution, the concentration of NH4+ decreased downstream to the mouth, while the concentrations of NO3 and DON increased. The relationships among NH4+, TDN, DIN and pH indicate that the pollution sources are mainly household sewage, and liquid waste from enterprises along the river.
