The main purpose of this research was to assess the concentration of nutrients in Shen-Ao Bay during the period when the release of warm water ceased from the Shen-Ao fossil fuel power station. Surface (0 m) and mid-depth (5 m) seawater samples were collected from 8 sampling stations in the bay during the period June 2009 to May 2010. The samples were analyzed for pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and chlorophyll-a.
The results show that during the study period the high temperature, low salt layer of surface seawater in the bay disappeared. The concentrations of nutrients were higher in the surface seawater than at mid-depth. The surface and mid-depth seawater differed in the composition and concentration of nutrients; an exception was the apparent layering at the sampling station of the petroleum company. The results indicate that the seawater inside the bay is significantly influenced by anthropogenic activities. Since cessation of the release of warm water from the power station the hydro-environment in Shen-Ao Bay has gradually recovered to natural conditions.
