Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣師範大學 === 翻譯研究所 === 98 === This thesis is themed as a case study on the translation strategy of wordplays in Chinese Subtitles of the popular TV series Sex and the City, collecting examples of wordplays from the DVDs officially released in Taiwan. Wordplays are uttered in special ways by speakers for certain purposes. The examples are classified into three categories: pun, blend, and coined word/phrase. The analysis is based on the communicative translation theory by Peter Newmark. The thesis then assesses each example by pragmatic-markedness equivalence principle proposed by Hou Guo-Jin. For those fail to reach the effect of communication, translation strategies based on pragmatic perspective are suggested for improvement. It is aimed to, aside from the viewpoint of qualitative research, provide an objective criterion and serve as the benchmark for self-check of translation. Chinese speaking audience could not access foreign videos without subtitling. The quality of subtitling is rather important with more foreign films introduced to the market. This thesis serves also as a reference for the equivalence between translation of wordplays and the original, and hopes to enhance the quality of subtitling.
