Survey subjects were students of the 8th graders of a junior high school in Taipei County, among which 335 were valid. The research tool was the “Questionnaire on Junior High School Students’ Preferences in Chinese Popular Songs” developed by the researcher. Frequency distribution, percentage, average, standard deviation, and independent-sample T-test were used for analysis. Substantial conclusions included the following: 1. The internet was an important source for the students to gather information on Chinese popular songs. 2. The students’ music preferences for the Chinese popular songs were: (1) Rock and roll was the most favorite type of songs for the students. (2) Melody was the most decisive reason in terms of the students’ preferences. (3) Idols were the favored type of singers for the students. (4) Talent and singing techniques of singers had a decisive reason for the students’ preferences of singers’ characteristics. 3. Different background variables, including genders, experiences of extracurricular music lessons, participating music clubs, musical instrument settings at home, had differences in students’ opinions about sources of music information and preferences for types of Chinese popular songs. Based on these conclusions, the researcher also proposed substantial suggestions with regard to the teaching practice and related studies in the future.
