His music is known for the personal style with a strong connection to literature and poetry. This thesis focuses on Schumann’s life, compositional style and techniques, and the structure of his 《Piano Sonata No. 2 in g minor﹐Op. 22》.The first chapter is the introduction, and the second chapter contains Schumann’s life and a brief introduction of his music style. In the third chapter, a detailed analysis of musical structure such as form and harmonic vocabulary of his 《Piano Sonata No. 2 in g minor﹐Op. 22》is included. The fourth chapter introduces the interpretations and comparison of two recordings Sviatoslav Richter and Martha Argerich of this piece. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of this thesis. Schumann’s《Piano Sonata No. 2 in g minor﹐Op. 22》 fully reveals his music style with the elegant melodic lines, harmony, diverse rhythm, etc. Hopefully, the analysis of this thesis can provide practical information for performers, music educators, and students of this sonata.
